1. Write a solid summary statement
The summary statement is your opportunity to make a great first impression, so use it wisely. Our jobseeker begins by stating that she enjoys providing service. As a barista position is all about great service, this is a key quality that an employer wants to see. Notice that the jobseeker mentions making coffee and beverages. It’s important to show upfront that you have skills that can transfer to the new job.
When you write your summary statement, mention your soft skills, such as multitasking or leadership ability, in addition to hard skills such as running a cash register. Add some personal qualities, as our jobseeker did with “personable and friendly.” This creates a great snapshot of who you are.
2. Showcase your education
Not all barista positions require education, but you should list what education you do have. In our resume for barista position with no experience, the jobseeker has attended community college and has earned a degree applicable to the job. Even if your degree is not applicable to the job, list it anyway. Employers want to see that you can learn new tasks and concepts.
It’s a good idea to mention coursework that is relevant to the job, regardless of the degree earned. Did you take a math class? Write it down. Basic math skills are helpful for baristas. Any chemistry or science classes? List those, too. If you have not yet attended college, put your high school diploma or GED and list pertinent coursework.
3. Include diverse skills
If you’ve never been a barista, demonstrate your ability to learn and adapt. You can do this in the work experience section. This jobseeker has done a wide variety of tasks in her previous positions, such as food prep, shift scheduling, cleaning, handling money, and serving customers. Employers can ascertain that she has the necessary flexibility and smarts to make a career shift.
Notice the job description, “dressed as the cow.” While this may seem humorous, a hiring manager will take note of this jobseeker’s willingness to do whatever job assigned to her. You can send the same message by enumerating a wide variety of assignments in your work experience section.
4. Make every detail count
Find ways to bring out experiences and skills that will be an asset in a barista position. For example, in the skills section, our jobseeker writes that she has made beverages and special coffee drinks. Under work experience, she once again mentions that she “upsold specialty coffee drinks” and made “coffee, lemonade, and iced tea.” Future employers can see that she is familiar with and can use coffee products.
Coffee-making isn’t the only attribute a barista should have. Any uses of technology or money handling are desirable as well. Our resume sample mentions cashier experience in both of the previous jobs. The jobseeker has also used a headset and tablet for orders, so employers know she can handle technology.
A well-written resume is your best ally in your job hunt. Powerful resumes help jobseekers get more interviews and introductions. By studying our resume for barista position with no experience and following its guidelines, you are well on your way to crafting the document that will get your foot in the door.
Write a strong introduction, followed by skills and education. Wrap it up with work experience that shows you are versatile and willing to learn.
